Adoption and the Bible

I was looking at some blogs today about adoption and was totally moved by this woman's post. I found it on her blog at http://1pieceofme.blogspot.com/

Adoption and the Bible

I've never claimed to be a scripture scholar. Don't get me wrong, I read my scriptures and have a testimony of their truthfulness but I've never been like my grandpa or brother who could spout off scriptures without even thinking. But that doesn't mean that the stories don't touch me and stay in my mind.

I was thinking the other day about adoption and out of no where the story of Moses popped into my mind. I had to go to the Bible and re-read it to make sure that I was remembering it correctly. And right there in Exodus 2:9 is a beautiful phrase that just hit me.

Jochebed gave birth to Moses right after Phararoh ordered that all baby boys from the house of Isreal must be killed. Jochebed didn't want her son to die. She came up with a plan to save him. She put him in a basket and put him in the river.

Phararoh's daughter found him and rescued him from the river "and he became her son." Those 5 words stuck out to me. Through what we now know as adoption, Moses became her son.

I love this story for multiple reasons. I love that the scriptures have the ability to relate to everyone. I believe that this story was included to give comfort and a feeling of belonging and acceptance to those of us who will travel down the path of adoption. I love the simple testiment that it gives that children who are not born by us can still become our children. I also love the respect and love that is dedicated in those verses to Jochebed. It is obvious that she was a good mother. She loved her son and would do anything to provide him with what she couldn't at the time. She literally saved his life by giving him to someone else. What faith that must have taken, what courage, what strength. What a remarkable woman. Though the situations might be different, the amazing birthmothers that make people like me parents are truly just as remarkable as Jochebed.

I love the truthfulness of the miracle of adoption. I love that even Moses, a prophet of the Old Testiment can teach us about adoption and the amazing people that make it possible. I love adoption.

I love this. Adoption has been a part of my family too, and I love the idea of giving up a life to save it. Even though these mothers love these children, they know that they cannot give them life. They cannot save them. But there are others who can. It takes so much faith and courage to be on both ends of adoption. I'm glad you shared this. I hadn't thought about Moses quite like this before.

Thank you for sharing this story. I will have to share it with Jared tonight. I had complications during my pregnancy with Alexis. My doctors want me to strongly consider adoption in our family planning. I'm glad that you shared this. I think it was inspired!
